VILANO BEACH DEVELOPMENT
In 1999, the Waterfronts Vilano Team was created under the umbrella of the North Shores Improvement Association. The team was successful in their bid for Vilano to be designated by the State of Florida as a "Waterfronts Florida Community".
This designation and NSIA's Visioning document created 1998 have been the basis for the revitalization initiatives in this area. The vision of the Waterfronts Vilano Team is for the area to become a sustainable, Vilano Beach, Florida

pedestrian-friendly waterfront community with a town center. The creation of a mixed-use town center along Vilano Road will provide exploration opportunities for visitors on foot as well as providing goods and services for residents.

The Waterfronts Vilano Team has worked diligently to acquire grant funding and private donations to aid in their efforts.

Following are just a few of their accomplishments to date:
  • Landscaping of the entrance to Vilano
  • Development/Approval of an Overlay Zoning District which defines the desired community characteristics
  • Construction of a Nature Boardwalk linking the residential area to the North with the proposed Town Center to the south. Grand Opening was held in 2002.
  • Creation of a Town Center design
  • Application/receipt of a grant to build pavilions at the fishing pier on Vilano Road and at the Beach entrance. Both will be completed in 2003.
  • Development of a Vilano Brochure that highlights the area - To see the brochure refer to the links shown on the Bulletin Board and on the Contacts and Links Page
  • Opening and dedication of the Fishing Pier Pavillions
  • Presented the 2002 Sustainable Florida Award presented by the Council for Sustainable Florida In October, 2002.
  • Presented the 2002 Master Planning Award by the First Coast Florida Planning and Zoning Association.
  • Designated by the Board of County Commissioners in 2002 as a Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) to aid in the funding of projects. Committees established to develop project plans as follows:
  • Completion of the Beach Pavillion
  • Develop project plans for Town Center, Community Center & Surfside Park.
  • Develop/Implement mixed-use zoning for Town Center
  • Develop/Implement a storm water drainage plan
Current Plans:
It's time to get down to business. The next step in Vilano's future is for the business community. North Shores has hired a part-time business development manager for the Vilano Beach town center and plans are underway for Vilano's bright future as commerce center.
