VILANO BEACH COMMUNITY
The Hub of the Vilano Beach Community is the "North Shores Improvement Association"
NSIA is a community organization founded in 1939 and was the first such
community organization in St. Johns County.
|
|
The organization represents the area from South Ponte Vedra to Porpoise Point in
Northeast St. Johns County.
There is a monthly forum at the Community Center the second
Monday of each month at 7:00 pm for fellowship, communication, and
discussion of issues that impact the area."

NSIA provides the cohesive unit that represents issues to county and state government.
The Community Center, located at 120 Meadow Avenue, was completed
in 1952 on land donated by Jack Thompson, Harold Ryman and Mary
Gardiner in 1940. The center was built through fund raising events and
hands-on construction by members. NSIA has partnered with St. Johns
County and raised additional funds to make further improvements on the
donated land including: (1) the addition of a building to house the
volunteer fire department (2) recreational facilities including tennis courts,
a ball field, and a playground.
NSIA was one of the founding members of the St. Johns County Civic
Association Roundtable in the 1980's, which provides a forum for
organizations throughout the county to interact and make
recommendations to county and state governing officials.
Because of their 60+ year record of success, NSIA was selected by St.
Johns County in 1998 to develop a Visioning Document for the Vilano
area. The completed document was approved by the St. Johns County
Commission in 1999. It addresses the future vision for the area and
overcoming the negative impacts to the businesses on Vilano Road that
occurred as a result of the opening of a new bridge in 1995. In addition,
the document further addresses land use, infrastructure, recreation,
architectural controls, beautification, governance, etc.
Under the North Shores Improvement Association umbrella, a citizen-government
partnership was founded with St. Johns County. This planning group has designed
an award winning sustainable Town Center and has put controls into place to
preserve a cultural and historic heritage going forward."
Residents and businesses in the Vilano area are encouraged to join and
participate in the North Shores Improvement Association. Also watch for the North Shores
News is published every month by the St. Augustine Record, 32 pages which has photos
and stories of events in the area from South Ponte Vedra to Camamchee Island.
